Design Brief
Dorm and small space living presents a unique challenge in Storage and Organization categories. Guest Insights information indicates that this guest is looking for solutions that allow for flexible, smarter use of space. Often the space is shared, which indicates that there may be a desire for personalization or customization elements. Often additional design challenges are present including the need for portability and lack of ability to anchor items to walls.
Through understanding the Back To College guest needs, develop and test concepts and show potential business outcomes and guest impact.
Research began with identifying other key retailers within the college and small space living product category.
Fellow interns helped by sharing their college living experiences, specifically desired improvements within the living room, bedroom and dining spaces.
In addition to more indepth market analysis, a cross section of participants were selected to identify product opportunities.
Information from several brainstorming sessions was captured using a matrix which paired product categories with functionality attributes.
With key focus areas identified, ideas were generated keeping in mind brand principles and retails.
Concepts explored convenience through:
- built in detergent dispensers
- grow-as-you-fill hampers
- modular systems
Solutions focused on the end-to-end laundry experience:
- ease of loading
- comfort while carrying
- unloading quickly (both soiled and folded clothes)
Ultimately the backpack hamper concept was selected and developed as my first mass produced design in addition to my first design patent.
